Sorry for the absence...it's been a busy few weeks!
Italian cinema is one of my areas of interest, and it's also a great way to improve your Italian as well as learn about Italian culture. If you're not sure where to start, check out this book published by Gremese Editore:
Il cinema italiano in 100 film by Massimo Bertarelli.
This is an interesting book that profiles 100 Italians films that the authors believes are worth preserving. It's also completely in Italian, so you're bound to expand your vocabulary from reading this book. It's well written and not difficult to understand.
Each film is profiled along with stills from the movie as well as a short synopsis and explanations as to why each film is worth seeing. I really enjoyed the book and learned about some Italian films that I had never seen or heard of, so if you're looking to expand your Italian film horizons beyond the standard fare of Fellini films, this is definitely a book worth investigating if only to help students of Italian know that there are many other wonderful movies, actors and directors beyond those Fellini films and those who works on Fellini films.
Gremese Editore is also a great resources for books on Italian films. Check out their web site as it seems to be the only place to purchase the book. IBS.it has the book listed as unavailable, but it might be available directly from the publisher. I have a bibliography to publish on books about Italian cinema in English and in Italian that I will publish shortly.
